So I’ve embarked on a long, and foolhardy project. Using Championship Manager 01/02 (which is being kept alive at this site), I am setting the data back twelve years. I used to make Championship Manager updates back in my younger days, and I thought I’d try my hand at recreating my favourite season.
There is one way in which it naturally fits – with the difference being twelve years, both seasons end in a World Cup. Aside from that, though, lots of compromises have to be made – a great many countries had different borders back then, and most competitions had very different structures (if they existed at all). I’ve come up with solutions to this which I believe give a flavour of the era, and I’ll detail these in later posts.
I’ve already been working on it for a few months, and it’s clear that it will take a long time to get to a playable state. There are many players to backdate, move, delete or add. The aim for the first “official” release is to get the English, German and Scottish leagues satisfactorily playable, then move on from there.
Full squads from 27 years ago are hard to find, let alone info on reserve teams, backroom staff, players’ attributes etc. I’d therefore invite contributions from anyone willing – I hope to release test versions, so that people can give feedback and see what’s missing.
More info is to follow, but here’s some screenshots of where I am so far. Bear in mind that this is a) an incomplete project, and b) some of the clubs shown will have made transfers during the game.
